How do you request emergency assistance?
You can reach our departments emergency line, be either calling 592-2222 or 911, both numbers will get your call to us, but they do function a little differently.
Calling Local Emergency Number
When you call our local emergency number your call will be answered (after 3 rings) by an automated answering machine. The system will state “you have reached the Norman’s Cove-Long Cove Volunteer Fire Department, please state your name, location and nature of emergency” once your hear the beep please leave your message.
Your call will be directed to a PSAP (public safety answering point), your call will be answered by an operator, they will state “911, do you need police, fire or ambulance?” please inform the operator of your emergency and location, they will redirect your call to our local number. Your call will be answered (after 3 rings) by an automated answering machine. The system will state “you have reached the Norman’s Cove-Long Cove Volunteer Fire Department, please state your name, location and nature of emergency” the operator will stay on the line with you, during this time, when you hear the beep, leave your message, the operator will ensure you don’t leave any important information out.
What Happens Next?
As your leave your message on the answering service, described above, the message is played live on pagers carried by every member of the department, once our members hear your call they respond to the fire hall, and respond to the scene in the fire trucks.
In addition to the the pager system the Norman’s Cove-Long Cove Volunteer Fire Department subscribes to another automated system, Edispatches. This system records the calls as they could in and sends text or audio messages to all members cell phones, this means regardless where we are in the world we can get the call regardless of pager range, as long as we have cellular service.
All officers of the department also carry pager radios, this allows the officers to communicate at all times.
Reporting an emergency
Regardless of which way you reach us, it is very important when leaving a message please remain clam and speak clearly. This allows our members to fully understand the assistance you need, also it is always best to leave a contact number in case we need to reach you.
Call our number by mistake?
Mistakes happen, and our number is often called in error, we simply ask that if you do call our number in error that you stay on the line until the message is played, and simply state “sorry wrong number”. Because as soon as the phone rings our pagers activate, and if we don’t hear a message we do not know if you need help or not.
